Design Elements and Their Meanings

Stars: The three stars in the upper left quadrant represent the three main island groups of Tonga: Tongatapu, Ha'apai, and Vava'u. 

Crown: The crown in the upper right quadrant represents the monarchy of Tonga. 

Dove and olive branch: The white dove and olive branch in the bottom left quadrant represent peace and unity. 

Swords: The three swords in the bottom right quadrant represent the three royal dynasties of Tu'i Tonga, Tu'i Ha'atakalaua, and Tu'i Kanokupolu. 

Cross: The cross on the six-pointed star in the middle symbolizes the nation. 

Garland: The garland around the crown represents the judicial authority of the chief and the royal dependence on God's grace. 

Motto: The motto, "Ko e 'Otua mo Tonga ko hoku Tofi'a", translates to "God and Tonga are my inheritance". 

Supporters: The Triton and the Kite are the two symbolic supporters of the coat of arms, representing the ocean and the sky.
